The CCP has always seen propaganda as of great importance, and the slogan (kouhao) is one method of achieving the aims of the propagandist. It is usually short, easy to remember, and neatly encapsulates a particularly important idea or call to action. The sixty years’of changes and achievements of the PRC can be traced to various slogans. Some of the slogans that are most representative of these changes are as follows...

"Struggle for the production of 10.7 million-tons of steel"——this is the slogan of the steel workers procession at Tiananmen during the 1958 National Day celebrations. In August of 1958, CPC conduct a nationwide campaign of galloping steel-making, part of the Great Leap Forward. The Great Leap Forward between 1958 and 1960 was aimed at advancing the economic strength of China on a large scale and in a short period of time.

At a factory in 1977, workers hold a banner reading "Expose and criticize the towering crimes committed by the Gang of Four on a full scale". The Gang of Four was the name given to a leftist political faction comprised of four Chinese Communist Party officials: Jiang Qing, Mao Zedong's last wife and leading figure of the group, and her close associates Zhang Chunqiao, Yao Wenyuan, and Wang Hongwen.

"Household responsibility system benefits all."——the slogan during the National Day parade on October 1st, 1984. In the traditional Maoist organization of the rural economy, peasants were given a quota of crops to produce, which hindered the development of the productive forces. Under the responsibility system adopted in 1982, peasants were given drastically reduced quotas. The food they grew beyond the quota was sold on a free market at unregulated prices.

Bear less and better children to have a happier life. Family Planning policy (one-child policy) was introduced in 1978 and initially applied to first-born children in 1979. It was created by the Chinese government to alleviate social, economic, and environmental problems in China. The policy is controversial both within and outside China because of the manner in which the policy has been implemented.

"Development is of top priority"—a rural wall slogan in 1989 taken from a Deng Xiaoping quote. During the crucial phase of reform and opening up in 1992, Deng Xiaoping brought forward this famous judgment, which proved to be helpful for the further liberation of the productive forces.

"We should never make education poor, even though we are very poor; we should never let the children suffer, even though we are in poverty." ——this is the slogan on a village wall in Henan province in the early 1990s. At that time, more and more attention was paid to basic education, and slogans like this were prevalent in China.

Children pose for a photo under the slogan "Three Representations" at Long Men village on Hainan Island in 2002. The then General Secretary of the CPC Jiang Zemin put forth this important thought of "Three Representations". The idea refers to "It [the Communist Party of China] represents the development trends of advanced productive forces;it represents the orientations of an advanced culture;it represents the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of the people of China."

To create a stable economic environment for national development, the slogan "To construct a socialist harmonious society" was put by current general secretary of CPC Hu Jintao in 2005. Students party members were convened to study Scientific Development Concept, which is the current official guiding socio-economic ideology incorporating sustainable development, social welfare, a person-centered society, increased democracy, and, ultimately, the creation of a Harmonious Society. Credit for the theory is given to current Chinese leader Hu Jintao and his administration.

"Devote our faithfulness to the communist party"——intellectuals at Nanjing institutions of higher learning show their loyalty to the party during a parade after the Anti-Rightist Movement in 1958. The definition of "rightists" generally referred to those intellectuals who appeared to favor capitalism and class divisions and were against collectivization. The campaign was instigated by Chairman Mao Zedong.
