He looks like an official, his writings have a tone of official jargon. On May 2, a group of pictures about the “general leader of Young Pioneers League of Wuhan” suddenly gets national attention and are spreading wildly online. The protagonist of the pictures is a boy named Huang Yibo (黄艺博). In the pictures he wears red scarf and five-bar badge, looks sober. And some netizens searched the internet and posted previous articles about him. After viewing the pictures and articles, some netizens think that Huang Yibo has been wrapped up and publicized for certain purpose since long time ago. Who is Huang Yibo, what is his background? On May 2, a journalist contacted his father Mr. Huang Hongzhang.

“Five-bar badge” picture of Huang Yibo gets controversy

It is said that Huang Yibo is 13 years old and is a grade one student of attached junior middle school of Central China Normal University in Wuhan, provincial capital of Hubei Province. He is now the vice general leader of Chinese Young Pioneers League of Wuhan City. His blog was opened on February 8, 2011. So far he has only posted one article and two albums. Before May 1, his blog had only few clicks, but by 8pm of yesterday, up to 900,000 visitors and several thousand comments are recorded to his blog. Among the pictures, one picture showing a half-body Huang Yibo sat in the headquarters of Chinese Young Pioneers League of Wuhan and read documents alone gets 30,000 clicks and 247 comments. In the picture, Huang Yibo wearing five-bar badge looks sober and carefully peruses the documents in his hand. (A student’s status within the Chinese student cadre system is reflected on the badge s/he wears, if any. The more bars on the badge, the higher ranking he has. Typically the top-level student cadres wears three-bar badge.) One netizen comments him “very official”. But some netizens suspect that the background of his family is not simple and may have deep relationship with higher ranking offcials.

Huang Yibo explains in the article preface of opening a blog the reason why he opens the blog is “to express my desire, mind and ambition to cultivate myself and put my family in order so as to rejuvenate Chinese nation, extend the glories of Han and Tang China.” To this statement, netizen Yuexiachamo (月下茶靡) says:”He is actually in his childhood of purity and simplicity, but has been educated this way to mimic the tone of an adult. It is unknown whether the society, the teacher or the family should be blamed” . Some netizens think the article is empty in content and supposed to be written by his teacher or parents. Among the netizens who come to look on, some also hold a positive posture and praise him for his ambition, but a majority express unable to accept such a teenage appearing like an official. Some netizens searched the web and listed previous reports about him: This Chinese boy began to watch Xinwen Lianbo (新闻联播, prime time news on China Central Television) at the age of 2. He has been reading People’s Daily and Reference News (Cankao XiaoXi, 参考消息) every day since 7. Until today, he has published over 100 articles on influential Chinese newspapers. Some netizens think that Huang Yibo has been wrapped up and publicized for certain purpose for a long time.

Huang Yibo’s father responds with his attention to delete the blog

At around 1pm of yesterday, a journalist contacted Huang Yibo’s father Mr. Huang Hongzhang. When acquainted with the online negative comments of his son, Mr. Huang got angry but helpless. He said he should consult his wife Ma Xiaoli and then decided if they whould accept the interview. At 2pm, Mr. Huang Hongzhang told he was ready to be interviewed.

“His mother and I really do not know what we should do”,Mr. Huang got excited and told that he wanted to delete the blog so that the netizens with evil purpose could not comment on his son’s image carelessly, but he did not know how to delete the blog. When knowing that there is no function for deleting the blog on the website, Mr. Huang felt completely at a loss,”I would like to quiet down this affair as early as possible,I really hope this affair will not hurt my son. He is only a child. Why are those people venting their discontent with the society on my son?”

Huang Yibo’s mother Ma Xiaoli said, after reading the online negative comments on his son, she feared his son would think too much and told his son that it was normal,” How others look at you is not important, the important thing is that you have nothing to be ashamed of”.

When the journalist raised the intention to contact Huang Yibo himself, Mr. Huang Hongzhang refused citing the reason that the child was in class and the interview might disrupt him.
