Hong Kong softcore porn star Diana Peng Dan was recently appointed as member of Gansu's CPPCC. Born of a beauty and talent in a red family in Changsha in central China's Hunan province, Diana Peng emigrated to USA at the age of 14. Taking advantage of her enviable bust, she moved to Hong Kong in 1995 and starred as a porn actress in several Category III films. Aware of her sex appeal ebbing among her fans, she moved to mainland China in 1998 and transferred herself to a mainstream actress, a director, a successful businesswoman and finally a politician.

Sexy Chinese actress Diana Peng Dan has seen her popularity increasing in China after she was appointed recently as member of Gansu's CPPCC. Born in 1973 in Hunan, Peng Dan emigrated to USA at the age of 14 and she rose to fame in Hong Kong as a porn star in the 1990s.

Chinese have envied other nations for allowing sexy porn actresses to contest for presidency with other formally polite male candidates for decades. It is not necessary any more. Chinese can now boast of having their own porn star politician, though not chosen by their own votes.

Diana Peng Dan (also known as Diana Pang), a sexy Chinese actress, and former X-rated Hong Kong softcore porn star, was recently appointed as member of Gansu's Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Committee (CPPCC).

Largely unkonwn for most of mainland Chinese who do not go to cinema very often, Peng should be happy to see her media exposure soaring, which is key for an actress' success, when she attended the first meeting of the 11th Gansu CPPCC congress that started on Tuesday in Lanzhou, Northwest China's Gansu province.

This time it is not her hot figure, but her political wisdom that was focused by the media.

To questions of reporters, Ms. Pang did not say directly what proposal she would put forward to the Gansu provincial government, but expressed her desire to invest more in Gansu and produce more Gansu-focused films and television programs, especially more "patriotism themed works (主旋律作品)" .

Certainly Peng would not waste any chance to promote her business and the films she starred (and surely she would not mention any X-rated films she starred in Hong Kong).

She told reporters that she has just finished producing and directing a perfectly patriotism-themed movie Nan Ni Wan (南泥湾, Nanni Village) which also casts herself as the major actress. Nanniwan describes how the 8th Route Army under communist leadership overcame piles of difficulties and fought bravely against Japanese during the WWII in northern China's Shaanxi province.

"Some media has compared Nan Ni Wan to War Horse directed by Steven Spielberg. It may overpraise it, but Nanniwan is working in this direction. War Horse does not tell you directly what is patriotic theme, but it does promote the American mainstream values, while Nanniwan upholds Chinese values through promoting traditional Chinese culture and Nanniwan Spirit."

"And the purposes of the Nanniwan is to convey a positive energy to the Chinese youths", added Diana Peng.

Born to a revolutionary family, Diana Peng is now not a Chinese citizen

The CPPCC is a political advisory body in China. No doubt it is dominated by CPC, but it does have delegates from other political parties (under CPC leadership) as well as independent (pro-CPC) members.

Her profile on Baidu Baike shows she is a Hong Kong singer, movie and TV drama actress, dancer, film director, producer and most importantly porn star and big breasts sister. But she is not a communist party member.

Nor is Peng a Chinese citizen.

Born November 10, 1973 in in Changsha, capital of central China's Hunan province, Diana Peng Dan, also known as Diana Pang, is now an overseas Chinese who rose to fame in Hong Kong as a softcore porn actress in the 1990s.

Peng said she was born to a "red family" and her grandpa was a vice mayor of Zunyi, a revolutionary stronghold in Guizhou province.

Peng entered the renowned Beijing Dance Academy at the age of 8 and after graduation she was enrolled in Central Ballet Dancing Group as the youngest dancer. At the age of 14, she emigrated to USA with her family in 1990, and she entered the Dance Faculty of Juilliard School, New York City to study ballet. During her eight years in USA, Diana Peng broke a record as the only Chinese woman to win Miss China USA, Miss Asian, Miss American Chinese in three consecutive years.

Peng is said to be very good at ballet and splits.

Hong Kong softcore porn star in the 1990s

She returned to China and starred in a Canadian film Chinese Chocolate (落鸟) in 1995. The film won the Best Art award on the 46th Berlin Film Festival and seven awards including Best Movie award on the Montreal International Movie Festival.

Then she moved to Hong Kong. Taking advantage of a pair of 36F big breasts, she spent her first years in Hong Kong promoting her sex appeal. She appeared on many adult magazines as cover girl. And within short time, she gained wide attention in Hong Kong, but mostly for her proud bust. In 1995, she starred in Wong Jing's The Saint of the Gamblers (赌圣2:街头赌圣) as a sexy Thai casino mogul. The movie classified as Category III firm was very successful in Hong Kong and sent Peng Dan to stardom status both for her acting skills and her steamy figure. Since then she has been dubbed as "Big Breasts Sister" of Hong Kong. After the successful debut as a softcore porn actress, she starred in several other Category III films including Evil Instinct, Hong Kong Showgirls, The Imp, all in 1996.

But Peng had always kept her bottom line: she never appeared fully nude on screen.

The latter movies Peng starred in 1996 proved to be dull to Hong Kong residents. Aware of the loss of her sex appeal among the cinema goers, Diana Peng decided to move to mainland China in 1998 and transfer herself from a porn star to a mainstream actress who concentrates more in acting skills.

Diana Peng becomes a mainstream actress promoting patriotism

Taking advantage of her broad connection in the entertainment industry in Hong Kong, Diana Peng quickly held her ground in the movie circle in mainland China.

Since Peng moved her base to mainland China, she has starred in more than 30 movies and TV series. And most of them are patriotism themed. Her successful quick turn provides the evidence that sex and patriotism are not as incompatible as the Chinese propaganda has kept inculcating for decades.

In 2000, Peng starred in the patriotism-themed movie Drive a train to Beijing (开着火车上北京), which won Five First Project award from the central propaganda department.

In 2004, Peng starred in Whampoa Soldiers (黄埔军人), which won four awards in Hollywood International Movie Starlight Awards.

In 2006, Peng starred in Zhang Side (张思德) as a pure female Eighth Route Army soldier. The movie won several awards from central propaganda deparment.

In 2009, Peng starred in patriotic movie Lovely China (可爱的中国), which also won several awards from the central propaganda department of China.

In 2012, Peng produced, directed, and starred in the movie Nanniwan (南泥湾) as a present to greet the 18th Party Congress. The movie will show to public in early 2013.

Controversial appointment?

While many will question whether celebrities and foreigners are qualified to advise politicians they can rest assured that Diana Peng meets the CPPCC criteria of 'being a representative of the certain sector and influential'.

And Diana Pang Dan is not the only celebrity delegate to CPPCC.

Just a week ago, the 51 year old Hong Kong actor and Kung Fu star Stephen Chow Sing-chi has sparked hisses and whistles among Chinese netizens for being appointed to Guangdong's CPPCC.

Other celebrity delegates to CPPCC include Liu Xiang (national CPPCC), Eric Tsang Chi-wai, Kent Tong Chun-yip, Sally Wu and Ma Dingsheng, etc.
