Tang Wei received a call on Friday afternoon and transferred 210,000 yuan (roughly $35,000) to the swindler's bank account.

'Lust Caution' Chinese actress Tang Wei ridiculed by netizens as being a pure girl after cheated out of 210,000 yuan ($35000) in Shanghai by telecom swindlers.

"Lust, Caution" protagnonist Tang Wei reported to Shanghai police that she was cheated out of 210,000 yuan (roughly $35000) in a telecom fraud, Xinmin Net reported Sunday.

Tang Wei was filming in Songjiang, Shanghai. The money was cheated out of her bank account after she received a call yesterday afternoon. She reported the case to police as soon as she was aware that it was a fraud.

After the telecom fraud, Tang Wei was spotted going to a Bank of Communication outlet and she was confirmed by an employee of the bank to have opened a new bank account there.

Tang Wei (Chinese: 汤唯) , born in 1979 in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, is one of the top Chinese actresses. She is best known for her role in Ang Lee's  (李安) Lust, Caution (色戒) in which she co-starred with Tony Leung Chiu-Wai (梁朝伟). In March 2008, China's State Administration of Radio Film and Television (SARFT) ordered a media ban citing Tang's performance of sexual acts in Lust, Caution. The ban was cancelled two years later.

Telecom-based fraud is a growing type of crime in China, in which the suspects usually claim to be staff of bank, court or any other official institution, or "congratulate" the victims on winning a prize or lottery, and then swindle the victims to transfer the money via ATM or internet or telephone to their accounts.

Usually such fraud is not so shrewd and actually easy to be seen through. It is estimated the swindlers averagely succeed on one person out of one thousand and the victims are usually farmers, migrant workers, senior citizens and some Chinese Dama (大妈, middle aged women).

While some netizens show sympathy with Tang Wei and condemn the swindlers, others are surprised that even their beautiful, clever and charming goddess could be swindled in such crude trick.

"Our goddess is so pure"! rediculed one netizen.

"Tang Wei proves to be a silly and naïve girl"! commented another.
