Explosion inside an under-construction expressway tunnel killed 20

The Tunnel blast happened in Yanling county, Zhuzhou city, on an expressway linking the counties of Yanling and Rucheng, when a vehicle carrying 288kg of explosives was unloading in the tunnel.

20 people were killed in an tunnel explosion inside an under-construction expressway tunnel in central China's Hunan province on Saturday morning, local authorities said.

 

May 19, 2012, Changsha - When the explosion took place at around 8:30 am, there were 24 people trapped inside the under-construction expressway tunnel in central China's Hunan province that was ripped through by a blast of explosives Saturday morning, local authorities said. Sofar the explosion has killed 20 people and Four workers have been pulled out of the tunnel, including one in critical conditions. Rescuers are searching for survivors with a life detector.

The tunnel blast happened in Yanling county, Zhuzhou city, on an expressway linking the counties of Yanling and Rucheng, when a vehicle carrying 288kg of explosives was unloading in the tunnel.

Presently the site has been locked by police and corresponding officials have arrived at the spot to direct rescuring efforts.

Accidents and explosions are common in China due to weak safety standards and lax building practices.
