China launches probe into Yunnan missing teenagers; several confirmed murdered

China’s ministry of public security has launched a probe after media reports said up to 17 teenagers had gone missing over the past few years in Yunnan province. Yunnan police has arrested a suspect named Zhang Yongming. Rumors are spreading across Jinning that the missing teenagers may have all been killed or even eaten.

Beijing, May 24 - China’s ministry of public security has launched a probe after media reports said more than a dozen teenagers had gone missing over the past few years in Jincheng Town, Jinning County, Kunming City of southwest Yunnan province. So far the reported missing persons have increased to 17.

On May 23 the county police chief and head of the local police station have been sacked.

The teenagers had gone missing from Nanmen village in Jinning county. Among those missing, Han Yao, a 19-year-old teenager was later found murdered, the Shanghai Daily reported.

Jinning police have arrested a 56-year-old man named Zhang Yongming in connection with the Yunnan serial missing of mostly teenagers and the murder of one of them. In the house of Zhang Yongming the dead teenager’s telephone card, bank card and other belongings were found.

It is said that several bags of human bones have been digged out near Zhang Yongming's house. The multiple Yunnan Missing may prove to be a seriel killing crime. Rumors are spreading across Jinning that the missing teenagers may have been killed or even eaten.

Zhang was sentenced to life in prison in 1978 for killing and dismembering a victim but was freed in 1997, said local police.

Local police confirmed that eight young men have been reported missing in the township since 2007, six of whom disappeared over the past 15 months.

"Local police should be blamed for neglecting their duties. Several people were missing in that area, but they neither put the cases on the record nor took measures to improve the security situation," Lü Enxiang, a lawyer from Beijing-based Chang'an Law Firm said.

List of the missing men

Han Yao 韩耀, male, resident of Zhenxiong County, Shaotong City of Yunnan Province, was missing near Xinyun Refrigeration Warehouse on April 25, 2012 at the age of 19. He was confirmed to be murdered.

Hao Yunhua 郝云华, male, was missing in Jincheng on April 3, 2012.

Cai Yunwei 采云伟, male, resident of Jincheng Town, Jinning County, Yunnan, was missing near Xinyun Refrigeration Warehouse on February 19, 2012 at the age of 17.

Ma Yunlong 马云龙, male, was missing near Nanmen Bridge on November 12, 2011 at the age of 22.

Li Wencai 李蚊才, was missing near Nanmen Village on November 9, 2011 at the age of 80.

Zhang Conglin 张聪林, male, was missing near Nanmen Bridge on November 6, 2011 at the age of 22.

Chen Tao 陈涛, male, resident of Jincheng Town, Jinning County, Yunnan, was missing near Nanmen Bridge in Jincheng on September 30, 2011 at the age of 16.

Hu Xingyue 胡兴越, male, resident of Shuanghe Town of Xuanwei County, Yunnan, was missing near Xinyun Refrigeration Warehouse on August 7, 2011 at the age of 16.

Xie Haijun 谢海俊, male, was missing in Jincheng on January 27, 2011 at the age of 16.

Liu Xu 刘煦, male, resident of Xuanwei City, Yunnan, was missing near Xinyun Refrigeration Warehouse in January, 2011 at the age of 17.

Zhao Jin 赵晋, male, was missing in Jincheng in late 2010 at the age of 18.

Zhou Yong 周勇, male, was missing near Nanmen Bridge on January 2, 2010 at the age of 15.

Lu Jialong 陆家龙 male, was missing near Nanmen Bridge on March 25, 2008 at the age of 17.

Gou Jianwei 苟建伟, male, was missing in June of 2007 at the age of 17.

Li Hanxiong, 李汉雄, male, was missing near Nanmen Bridge on May 1, 2007 at the age of 12.

Jiang Xiaosong 江晓松, male, was missing in Jincheng on October 17, 2005 at the age of 18.

Zhang Shuhua 张树华, male, was missing on May 29, 2005 at the age of 37.

Common features of the Yunnan serial missing

A reporter from People's Daily found the follwing common features the Yunnan serial missing shared after interviewing 6 pairs of parents of the missing teenagers.

First, most of the missing teenagers were aged from 16 to 19 years old and all were male except 12 years old Li Hanxiong getting missing in 2007 and 22 years old Zhang Conglin getting missing in 2011.

Second, the places where the teenagers were missing were not far from each other. At least five went missing in an area covering about 200 square meters.

Third, most of the teenagers went missing in the morning.

Fourth, almost all missing teenagers had no inclination of running away from their home. "Someone saw Han Yao coming out of dormitory. It is impossible that he changed his mind and decided to run away from home." mother of Han Yao said. Father of Hu Xingyue told reporter that his son was watching TV with a friend before suddenly going missing during the way to a WC. "It is unlikely that he decided in a sudden to run away from home", Hu Xingyue's father said.
