The the top 10 most congested Chinese cities of 2017 are Jinan, Beijing, Harbin, Chongqing, Hohhot, Guangzhou, Hefei, Shanghai, Dalian, Changchun.

Jinan, the capital city of East China's Shandong province, retained the title of "the most congested Chinese city of 2017" in a recent report.

The report,  titled  2017 Transportation Conditions of major Chinese cities, was released by the domestic navigation company Amap on Jan 18, Thursday in cooperation with institutes under the Chinese Ministry of Transport and Aliyun, a subsidiary of Alibaba Group.

The transportation condition of major cities is ranked based on the congestion time-delay index which represents the average ratio of the time citizens spend on traveling during the rush hour compared to the time they spend under free flow of traffic. A higher number shows more serious congestion.

With the time-delay index at 2.067, Jinan retains the championship as the most traffic-congested city of China in 2017. The city has been given the title in all four quarterly reports published by Amap.

Anyway as a relief, the traffic congestion condition of Jinan in 2017 is not worsened compared to 2016 although the number of serviceable vehicles of the city has increased.

The runner-up is Beijing. As the capital,  or Shoudu (首都) in pinyin ,of China,  Beijing is lucky enough to miss the title "Most congested", or Shoudu (首堵) in Chinese pinyin, by a little margin.  Its time-delay  index  of 2017 is 2.033.

The other eight cities on the top 10 are Harbin, Chongqing, Hohhot, Guangzhou, Hefei, Shanghai, Dalian, Changchun.

With three cites Harbin, Dalian, Changchun in the top ten, Northeast region of China appears to have the worst city traffic jams.

Of the four first tier Chinese metropolises including Beijing Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen,  only Shenzhen is not in the top ten, which ranks 37 out of 100 indexed cites. Compared to 2016, the index value of Shenzhen decreased by 7.5%.

Qingdao, the port city in the same province as Jinan, saw the most significant improvement in traffic congestion, its time-delay index decreased by nearly 10% compared to 2016. Qingdao ranks at 40.

Rankings of other major Chinese cities: Xi’an at 13, Chengdu at 21, Nanjing at 24, Wuhan at 47, Hangzhou at 48, Tianjin at 52, Hong Kong at 56, Zhenzhou at 60, Suzhou at 62.

Other good news is that the overall transportation conditions in Chinese major cities has improved in 2017 compared to the previous year.
