March 31, 2011, Zhengzhou - On the convention for cracking down on criminals, the authority of Xiangcheng City of Henan Province conducted public trial of 51 Chinese citizens suspected of severely disturbing the public order.
The public trial drew thousands of onlookers. During the public trial, the suspects were tied up together with ropes. A plate hang on the chest of each suspect telling their suspect status. Tens of armed forces, police officers were deployed to safeguard the trail plaza in front of the government building. Among the 51 suspects, 10 suspects were convicted on the public trial.
The public trial in some extent plays a role of intimidating potential criminals, but it also drew controversial. Some Chinese law experts said that the security office of Xiangcheng City violated the personal rights of the suspects.
Zhang Zhonghua, a lawyer of Henan Yanli Law Firm, said,"The Xiangcheng Security Office did not well in doing so. Public trial and parading suspects through the streets are both violating the civil rights. Before conviction by the people's court, personal rights of the suspects should be protected. The Highest People's Court of China has already given certain judicial interpretation for this matter."
