May 12, 2011,DEQING, Zhejiang -- Dozens of people living near a battery plant in Deqing County, Zhejiang Province in East China have dangerously elevated blood lead levels, according to medical tests carried out since March.

The company Zhejiang Haijiu Battery Co., Ltd., had no records of violating national regulations for environmental protection, passed the normally very difficult ISO14000 environtal protection certification. In addition, the company also passed environmental protection auditing conducted by local government. But just such a “model of environmental protection" has been recently singled out as the culprit of lead poisoning of the local residents.

By May 11, 31 of the 300 blood samples sent for medical testing were tested to have elevated lead levels, and 11 were samples of children. Another 1000 samples are still under assay, the number of lead poisoned patients may increase. At the moment the Zhejiang Haijiu Battery Co., Ltd. had been ordered to suspend its operations.
