Xi Jinping (Chinese: 习近平), ethnic Han, native of Fuping, Shaanxi Province, born in June 1953 in Beijing as the second son of the veteran revolutionary general Xi Zhongxun (习仲勋, 1913–2002). Xi Jinping, as a "send-down youth", went to work in Yanchuan County, Yan'an, Shaanxi, in 1969 in Mao Zedong's Down to the Countryside Movement. He left the countryside in 1975 for studying in Tsinghua University. After graduation with a bachlor's degree in chemical engineering, from 1979 to 1982 he served as secretary for his father's former subordinate Geng Biao, the then vice premier and Secretary-General of the Central Military Commission.

In 1982 he was sent to Zhengding County in Hebei and began his career in the Chinese civilian government. Xi subsequently served in four provinces during his political career: party cadre in a village in Shaanxi (during the Cultural Revolution, 1969—1975), party chief of Zhengding County of Hebei (1982-1985), city level and then provincial level official in Fujian (1985-2002), and party secretary of Zhejiang (2002-2007). Following the dismissal of Shanghai Party Chief Chen Liangyu (陈良宇) in September 2006 due to a social security fund scandal, Xi was transferred to Shanghai in March 2007 to become the new Party Chief of Shanghai. And shortly Xi was appointed as a member of the nine-man Politburo Standing Committee at the 17th Party Congress in October 2007, as Vice-President of the People's Republic of China on 15 March 2008, as vice-chairman of the central military commission in 2010. And finally in November 11, Xi Jinping became the general secretary of CCP at the 18th Party Congress, making him the Paramount leader of the Communist Party of China's fifth generation of leadership for the coming decade (2013-2022).

Peng Liyuan, Xi Jinping's celebrity wife, has been more famous for the past 20 years

But to many in China, Xi Jinping is most famous for his celebrity wife, the singer Peng Liyuan (彭丽媛), who also holds the rank of army general. A well-known Chinese folk singer and actress, Peng Liyuan regularly appears on Chinese state TV's New Year Gala - the most watched TV programme of the year. She was one of 23 people to receive the first Chinese Arts awards and a one million yuan ($159,800, £100,000) prize in December 2011. Peng Liyuan was appointed World Health Organisation Goodwill Ambassador for HIV/Aids and tuberculosis in June 2011. Peng Liyuan is also a major-general in the People's Liberation Army.

The couple have a daughter named Xi Mingze (习明泽, born in 1992), who is reportedly studying at Harvard University in the US.
