On November 26, a group of Chinese college girls performed action art in Wuhan of Hubei Province, protesting against gynecological exam and gender discrimination in national civil service examination.

At 11 am on Monday, a group of university girls performed action art titled "No gynecological examination in national civil service examination, men and women are equal", protesting against the requirement that college girls take gynecological examination as part of the civil service examination.

The action art performance took place in front of the provincial human resources department in Wuhan City, capital of Central China's Hubei Province. The college protestants held banners saying "We want to work as civil servants and we do not need gynecological examination", "Menstrual history has nothing to do with civil service", drawing large crowd of spectators.

Civil service examination requires female applicants to have gynecological exam and inform mentrual history

In March 2012, the experience of a senior college girl of China Youth Politics Academy became headline in Chinese media. The college girl was asked to fill in her menarche and her menstrual cycle and then to take careful gynecological examination. She felt nauseated and thought her private sphere had been infringed. Her argument that the menstrual cycle has nothing to do with working capability drew loud resonance among the public.

Currently the Chinese regulation General Criteria in Recruiting Civil Servants excludes applicants for civil service that suffer from heart diseases, blood diseases, tuberculosis, gonorrhoea, syphillis, condyloma acuminatum, AIDS, etc. And in Physical Examination Handbook for Civil Servants Recruitment, it is stipulated that the medical history of female civil service applicants includes menstrual history, including the menarche, menstrual cycle, volume and duration of bleeding, last time of menstruation, and the shape and color of leukorrhoea.

On Friday, China started the 2013 national civil service examination. It is reported that more than 1.5 million applicants took part in the exam and they were vying for the 20 thousand positions available.
